Back in January, we shared Gareth's story with you. Gareth held a Walk In Her Name to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Action and celebrate his fiancee Heidi, who died of ovarian after a shocking diagnosis aged just 36. With no screening tool available to detect ovarian cancer we sadly hear stories like theirs all too often. That’s why research carried out by scientists like Dr Emma Bell and Dr James Flanagan, is all the more important to ensure more women’s lives can be saved.

"For patients, and women in the general population, we are getting closer to having an appropriate test to establish an individual’s risk of developing ovarian cancer
Dr Flanagan

Dr. Flanagan firmly believes that one of the best chances to stop women from dying from ovarian cancer is by aiming to prevent it from developing in the first place. Together, with Dr Bell, they have been looking into lifestyle aspects that are associated with a risk of ovarian cancer. This includes anything from diet to taking the contraceptive pill and can have a lasting effect on a person’s biology.

Dr. Flanagan and Dr. Bell think that these lifestyle factors may play a role in ovarian cancer risk. By being better at understanding a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer, we can empower them to make informed decisions regarding different preventative measures. By taking part in Walk In Her Name you will be helping to raise money that could fund the salary of a post-doctorate researcher like Dr Bell. You will be directly funding research that will save women’s lives.
