Debbie - 'I can't wait to hug Mum at the finish line'

04 January 2023

This year, supporter Debbie (left, on the photo above) is taking on the Great North Run for us in support of her Mum, read her story about how she is looking forward to the incredible atmosphere and how you can join her in doing something amazing In Her Name in 2023.

'How is it the new year already? Christmas was so busy, but now it’s time to get thinking about new year’s resolutions again and I’ll bet you are too. This year, there’s one I am determined to achieve. I am running the Great North Run to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Action to support women with ovarian cancer – women like my mum.

My mum is one of the most caring, selfless women you will every come across.  She has spent her life looking after others and putting their needs before her own.

When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, after waiting four months for a diagnosis, it was really difficult for myself, my sister and the rest of the family. Not being able to be there for her (due to covid whilst she started treatment) and had her hysterectomy. Her just her being so poorly…its made me determined to help other women, in her name, by funding research into new treatments and early diagnosis.

The strength she has shown has been unbelievable, which makes me know if I only have a tiny bit of her strength, my partner Gary and I, can complete the Great North Run for her. I’m nervous and excited to be taking part – but I know that the unbelievable atmosphere on the day and the warm welcome from the crowds will get me through.

The thing I’m looking forward to the most though, is being able to see my mum at the finish line and telling her I’ve done it all for her. She’ll be so chuffed! She says she’s so proud of me for taking on the challenge. I just want to help other women so they have the best possible chance of surviving this awful disease. Just like my caring Mum would.

Join me in making a resolution to help women with ovarian cancer this year by taking on a challenge for Ovarian Cancer Action. Let’s do it for the ones we love the most.'
