Walking for Daisy
Jane-Marie completed Walk in Her Name in 2024, raising almost £1000. She has shared her story with the hopes of encouraging others to take part in Walk in Her Name and raise awareness of ovarian cancer.
"I walked for my wonderful friend, Daisy. I wanted to raise money in her memory and make a difference for women and their families everywhere. I loved the motivation that this challenge brought.
Daisy was my colleague at the school I was teaching, my mentor and most importantly, she was my friend. Teaching can be tough but we had a lot of fun working together.
When she retired, I missed her daily wisdom and support but her death was devastating - only 2 years into her retirement.
If there's one thing to take away from our story is that you can't take anything for granted and make the most of the time you've got."

"The Walk in Her Name community was incredibly supportive - with encouraging emails from Laura and Miranda and lovely support from other walkers through the Facebook group. I was very motivated to complete the challenge and to raise as much money as possible.
I always mean to walk more and this challenge made me focus on doing that. My top tip is to share photos from your walks on social media.
It helped me boost my funds by over £200 in just one weekend! I then increased my target, which incentivised friends to help me reach my next goal.
My standout moment during the challenge was when I realised I was within reach of raising £1000. I put an extra appeal out on Facebook for more donations get to my goal. Some of my sponsors donated again - I really wasn't expecting that generosity and was so touched.
When it gets tough, don’t forget who you’re doing it for. Do it for all the women in the future. Do it for those already lost. Do it for your own well-being. Ovarian Cancer Action is about research, and research is the key to fighting this disease!"

What is Walk in Her Name?
We're working towards a future where no woman dies of ovarian cancer and you can be part of that change. This March, step forward in support of women affected by ovarian cancer by committing to a walking challenge that fits around your life.
By covering 100km in your own way, you’ll be helping to fund vital research that improves diagnosis, treatment and survival. Every mile walked helps drive progress and brings us closer to a future where more women are diagnosed earlier and live longer, healthier lives.
