Innovating for the future of ovarian cancer research
What is World Ovarian Cancer Day?
We mark World Ovarian Cancer Day globally on the 8th of May every year.
Every year 324,000 women all over the world are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and this day unites supporters to raise awareness and share their stories.
This day is a powerful moment to reflect on the continued work we’re doing to support women to live beyond their diagnosis, and gives us a chance to lift the voices of those affected.
World Ovarian Cancer Day was created in 2013 by a group of patient advocacy organisations from around the world, with the aim to create a single, united day of action to draw attention to ovarian cancer. It's often diagnosed at a late stage and can be difficult to detect early.
If you want to get involved, look at our previous World Ovarian Cancer Day campaigns for inspiration.
Why World Ovarian Cancer Day matters
Despite advances in research, ovarian cancer is still the deadliest gynaecological cancer in the UK.
For a while, ovarian cancer was called the 'silent killer', but there are symptoms. However, the symptoms – such as bloating, tummy pain, and needing to pee more often – can often be mistaken for less serious conditions. This is one of the reasons there can be delays in diagnosis.
By taking part and getting involved in World Ovarian Cancer Day activity, you can:
- Raise awareness of early warning signs and symptoms
- Empower women with information for timely diagnosis
- Support research for improved treatments and early detection methods
- Join the conversation to help improve women's health
Together, we can change the future of ovarian cancer treatment.
Launching the AI Accelerator Grant
Amazing advances have been made in other cancers: what could AI do for ovarian cancer?
The AI Accelerator Grant, funded by a global consortium of ovarian cancer charities, will support cutting-edge research to harness the power of artificial intelligence.
The winning project will be the most promising idea to improve survival rates. Whether it's identifying early signs that humans can’t yet see to develop a screening tool, tailoring treatments to the individual, or uncovering new therapies we haven’t even imagined yet.
